Core Curriculum Assessment: Learn How You Can Help Shape Student Success

Curious about how your feedback can directly influence student learning at UT Dallas? The Core Curriculum Committee and the Office of Institutional Success and Decision Support (OISDS) invite you to take part in Core Curriculum Assessment, a campuswide effort to evaluate and strengthen student achievement across foundational courses.

Through this initiative, faculty and graduate students can learn what it means to serve as a rater — someone who evaluates student work using carefully designed rubrics that align with UT Dallas’ core learning objectives. Participants will explore how to apply rubrics effectively, provide meaningful feedback, and understand how assessment results help departments improve curriculum design and instruction.

Raters earn a digital badge recognizing their contribution to academic excellence, and participation also can count toward the Graduate Teaching Certificate.

To take the first step, complete the interest form. For more information, visit the Core Curriculum Assessment site or download the rater recruitment flyer (pdf).

‘Tenure: A Game Manual — The Successful Sabbatical’

What if a sabbatical could be more than time away from teaching? When Dr. En Li was named a Provost’s Teaching Fellow last year, her goal was to create content that helps early career faculty better understand and navigate academic life.

Li, associate professor of modern East Asian history, has done exactly that with “Tenure: A Game Manual,” a five-part podcast in which she interviews faculty from UT Dallas and three other universities.

In the newest episode, “The Successful Sabbatical,” Li talks with Dr. Bethany Wilinski, associate professor of teacher education at Michigan State University, about how faculty can turn sabbaticals into opportunities for renewal, creativity and balance.

In the episode, Wilinski shares how her own experience with burnout led her to create Sabbatical Coaching, a program that helps academics plan purposeful and restorative sabbaticals. By focusing on personal goals alongside research priorities, she encourages faculty to approach sabbaticals as a time to reset and reimagine their work.

The episode also explores how academic skills can translate into entrepreneurial ventures and sustainable careers.
