From Our CTL Director

Welcome to the fall 2024 semester! It’s been a busy summer at the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) with the launch of two exciting programs — the Provost’s Teaching Fellows and the Student Experience Project (SEP). These initiatives will significantly enhance our support for both faculty and the students you teach.

As we move into the new semester, we have an excellent lineup of webinars and in-person workshops planned for you in the coming months.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the hottest topics in higher education right now, and we are pleased to announce that UT Dallas has been accepted into the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum. This means you’ll see an expansion of programming around AI, including the CTL book clubs we announced this summer.

Sarah Moore MA’07 PhD’17, one of our three new Provost’s Teaching Fellows, will take the lead as our AI champion. You can learn more about her and the other two teaching fellows below.

In addition to these special offerings, we will continue our regular programming with monthly CTL Office Hours and Webinar Wednesdays, along with several in-person workshops on a variety of topics. For a full list of events, visit Comet Calendar and CTL’s News & Events page.

Here’s to a fantastic semester ahead!

Meet Our New Provost’s Teaching Fellows

CTL is pleased to announce the appointment of three new Provost’s Teaching Fellows for the 2024-2025 academic year. These faculty leaders will play a key role in planning and delivering high-quality programs and services with CTL, bringing their expertise to enhance teaching and learning across UT Dallas.

The inaugural cohort of teaching fellows includes Sarah Moore MA’07 PhD’17, associate professor of instruction, organizations, strategy and international management in the Naveen Jindal School of Management; Dr. En Li, assistant professor of modern East Asian history in the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology; and xtine burrough, a Bass School professor who teaches courses in media art and activism, social practice and computational art. Look for features on each of these fellows in upcoming newsletters.

Student Experience Project Comes to UT Dallas

UT Dallas, along with other UT System institutions, is now part of the Student Experience Project (SEP), a national initiative focused on enhancing student success through research-based, equitable practices. SEP aims to foster a sense of belonging, promote growth mindset, and improve student performance and persistence toward degree completion.

This academic year, CTL is inviting its first faculty cohort to explore and implement student-centered teaching practices that build community and empower students to overcome challenges. We’re excited to see the impact of these efforts as we work together to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all.

Grant Funds Expansion of Short-term Working Group Program

The Short-term Working Group (SWG) program at UT Dallas will be funded by a $20,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The grant was awarded to Dr. Salena Brody, professor of instruction in psychology and associate director of the CTL; Dr. Benedict Kolber, associate professor and director of the systems and cellular neuroscience PhD program in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences; and Dr. Lakeisha Lewter, postdoctoral research fellow in the Kolber Lab. The SWG program aims to break down traditional barriers to research, providing students with opportunities for research and skill building. Learn more about the SWG program.
